Instructor Policies and Best Practices

Instructor Policies

To determine if your testing methods are compatible, please review the Testing Center’s Policies.

  • The Testing Center can only proctor Blackboard tests. Please note, we do not proctor paper exams.
  • Instructors must submit a test request through the Exam submission form no later than 2 weeks prior to the exam.
  • Exams must run for at least one full day. We are unable to offer half or partial days for students to take exams.
  • Deploy your exam on Blackboard at least 4 business days in advance of the exam start date.
  • Students should be notified that their exams for the course will be administered at the Testing Center.
  • Please review the student Policies page to make sure your students are aware of our policies.
  • Regardless of class size, Students MUST attempt to make an appointment through their Registerblast account. Students are only permitted to walk in if they discover that the testing center is fully booked.

Best Practices

  • Submit exams through the Exam Submission form early in advance to avoid scheduling issues. If seating availability is limited, last minute exams might not be approved.
  • It’s ideal to have your exam ready on Blackboard at the time of making an exam submission. However, this is not a requirement. Having the Blackboard test ready allows the support staff to inspect test settings and verify that there will be no issues on exam day.
  • Once instructors deploy the exam, they can email testingcenter@boisestate.edu to inform us that the test is ready. Otherwise, Testing Center staff will begin checking for exam readiness about one week prior to the exam start date.

Blackboard Test Settings

  • Exams must be configured a specific way for compatibility with the testing center. The following settings must be set up according to the instructions and tutorial videos.

    • Open test in a new window: Always set to “No”.
    • Link availability: Always set to “Yes”.
    • Announcement: Create a test announcement according to the instructions.
    • Restrict the exam: Use location restriction for on-campus exams, and set a password for any off-campus exams.
    • Include an exam name.
    • Force Completion must always remain off.
    • Use of Due Date setting is not recommended, as it can override any test exceptions you create, and prevent you from extending the date range of the test.  The “Start” and “End” date setting is sufficient for limiting the test availability.

  • These options are based on professor preference

    • Multiple Attempts
    • Score attempts using
    • Auto-submit
    • Test Availability exceptions (used if you have students with Double time accommodation or make-up exam)
    • Due Date
    • Show test results and feedback to students
